Breast implants are foreign material. The body reacts to this foreign material and induces a foreign body reaction. It means that scar tissue is formed around the implant. This scar tissue is called a capsule. Over time the capsule can thicken and deform the breast or cause painful episodes. Symptoms will disappear once the capsule is removed. Some patients prefer not to have new implants and lipofilling is a solution to replace the missing volume (the implant). Another group of patients prefer an implant change with additional lipofilling.
HOW IT WORKS
The implant is removed and the capsule is completely removed or excised. This capsule is analyzed histologically. The pocket can be left alone or a new implant can be inserted in the pocket. Additional lipofilling or fat grafting of the subcutaneous layers is performed to add extra volume or to accentuate specific aesthetic areas of the breast.
